Tuberculosis notification status in Korea in 2017

Abstract

|
In 2017, the overall new tuberculosis(TB) notification rate was 55.0 per 100,000 population with an average reduction of 8.8% from the previous year, indicating that decreasing patterns were observed in all age groups. However, among the total new TB cases, the proportion of elderly patients aged 65 years or older occupied 41.9%, which represents a rapidly increasing epidemiological transition compared to 10 years ago (25.6%). The tuberculosis notification rates per 100,000 population by region were the highest in Jeonnam (79.6) followed by Gangwon (75.8) and Gyeongbuk (73.9). The number of foreign-born new patients with TB decreased from 2,123 in 2016 to 1,632 in 2017, whereas the number of multidrug-resistant TB cases decreased from 852 in 2016 to 689 in 2017. To diminish the TB burden, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and revention established the “Second Phase Tuberculosis Control Plan” reflecting the global TB control policy and the recent situation of TB in Korea, including strengthening the TB reporting system and reinforcing its infrastructure.
